Flower Show winners announced


Class 1, Moving Down the Line, Blue Ribbon, Judy Taylor (Photos contributed) Class 1, Moving Down the Line, Blue Ribbon, Judy Taylor (Photos contributed) The Millen Garden Council composed of the Green Thumb, Magnolia and Millen Garden Clubs sponsored a National Garden Clubs, INC. Standard Flower Show entitled “Take A Ride On ‘The Nancy’”. Held in the Olde Freight Depot Museum on Cotton Avenue, the train theme was carried throughout the building with signage and staging. The show consisted of three divisions, Design, Horticulture and Special Exhibits.

The design division, Springtime at the Depot, was composed of six classes: Class 1. Moving on Down the Line: 1st- Judy Taylor-Millen, 2nd-Susan Campo-Magnolia, 3rd-Mary Andrew-Millen, Honorable Mention-Buddy Pope-Green Thumb. Class 2. Looking Back: 1st-Jan Williams-Magnolia, 2nd Babe Wisler-Millen, 3rd- Wanda Rhodes-Green Thumb, Honorable Mention-Sharon Tillman Millen. Class 3. Around and About: 1st-Art Johnson- Millen, 2nd-Jerry Messex- Green Thumb, 3rd-Gay Nell Oglesby-Magnolia, Class 4. Small Things Remembered. 1st Gilda Rackley-Magnolia, 2nd- Joann Reeves-Green Thumb, 3rd-Martha Sue Wilson-Green Thumb, Honorable Mention- Mary Andrew-Millen, Class 5. Tea Time on the Nancy. 1st-Billie Newton-Millen, 2nd Sara Jo Britt-Green Thumb, 3rd-Jeni Chambers, Honorable Mention-Wilma Gainey-Millen. Class 6. Rails Across Dixie. 1st-Jane Johnson-Millen, 2nd Karen Johnson-Magnolia, 3rd-Veronica Cowart-Millen, Honorable Mention-Talmadge Fries, Green Thumb.


Class 2, Looking Back, Blue Ribbon, Jan Williams Class 2, Looking Back, Blue Ribbon, Jan Williams Top Awards in the Design Division were the Petite Award and the Award of Design Excellence which were won by Gilda Rackley (Magnolia GC) and the Designer’s Choice Award won by Art Johnson (Millen GC).

The Horticulture Division featured 191 bulbs and camellia entries. Top award winners were: Section A. Narcissus. Talmadge Fries, Award of Merit; Section B. Other Bulbs. Evelyn Young, Award of Horticultural Excellence; Section C. Camellias. Jan Williams, Award of Merit.


Class 3, Around and About, Blue Ribbon, Art Johnson Class 3, Around and About, Blue Ribbon, Art Johnson The Special Exhibits Division included 62 designs by young people from 4-18 years of age. Youth Top Exhibitor Awards went to Ali Bennett (High School), Brenna Lloyd (Intermediate) and Chanen Conway (Junior).

The Educational Top Exhibitor Award was given to Exhibit 1. Southern Collections-Georgia Historical Plates with an Award of Appreciation to Exhibit 2. Pure Nostalgia-Train Memorabilia.
